Professor John Melngailis (ECE/IREAP), a pioneer in the application of focused ion beams, has been named IEEE Fellow for his contributions in this field. He has been long recognized as a key figure in the prominence of focused ion beam (FIB) technology, from its many applications in microelectronics and related fields to the central role it now plays in nanofabrication. The work of the Laboratory for Ion Beam Research and Applications (LIBRA), led by Profs. Melngailis and Orloff, has placed UMD in a leadership position among universities in FIB. Professor Melngailis has been instrumental in the establishment of Maryland NanoCenter and the Fablab.
