MSE graduate students Khim Karki and Jane Cornett have been awarded Fellowships to the prestigious NSF-sponsored Joint US-Africa Materials Initiative in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As two of only 15 US PhD and post-doctoral researchers to receive this prestigious award, Karki and Cornett will join colleagues from East Africa for two weeks of lectures, problem solving and cultural exchange.
The initiative aims to build materials science research and collaborations between the United States and Africa, with an initial focus on East Africa, and to develop ties between young materials researchers in both regions in a school taught by top materials researchers.
This is the first Joint US-Africa Materials Initiative (JUAMI)workshop ever held, and is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the University of California Santa Barbara. Support is also provided by the Materials Research Society (MRS) and the African Materials Research Society (AMRS).
