Under a $1.5M Federal grant through and with NIST, the Maryland Nanocenter will address the important issue of nanotechnology's impact on health and the environment. The new program, Center for Nanoparticle Risk, Impact, and Assessment, will operate as part of the UMD-NIST Center for Nanomanufacturing and Metrology. Nanoparticles comprise a key component of many potential advances expected from nanotechnology, but they new questions and concerns about health and environmental impact. Accordingly, the Center for Nanomanufacturing and Metrology will emphasize these key issues as part of its program. The new effort seeks to develop a strong science base for understanding these issues, building upon Maryland NanoCenter expertise and NIST collaborations in nanoparticle synthesis and cell-based microsystems.
