The Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Sensors and Actuators Lab was awarded first prize at the third annual IEEE Lasers & Electro-Optics Society (LEOS)Baltimore and Washington-Northern Virginia Graduate Student Poster Competition. The April 25, 2007 ceremony was held at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD.

Co-authors Nathan Siwak, Xiao Fan, Dan Hines, Ellen Williams, Neil Goldsman, and Reza Ghodssi shared the award for their research titled, "Chemical Sensor Utilizing Indium Phosphide Cantilevers and Pentacene as an Absorbing Layer." The group has been conducting ongoing research with the promise of creating future handheld sensors for military and aviation use. The sensors can help detect harmful, toxic or even explosive vapors.
