Kunyi Zhang, a graduate student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland (UMD), won first place in the student poster competition at the 1st Annual Optics and Photonics Conference, hosted by the Optical Society of America at John Hopkins University (JHU) on December 11, 2017.  The goal of the conference is to connect optical researchers at JHU and get the word out about local photonic research. Invited speakers included Dr. Giuliano Scarcelli, an Assistant Professor in the UMD Fischell Department of Bioengineering.

Zhang’s poster, entitled, “Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy and Mode Coupling in Metallic Nanostructures Consisting of Nano-Arcs or Nano-Crescents," focuses on the fabrication of metal nanostructure arrays and the FTIR spectroscopy study of their plasmon resonance modes.

Zhang began her studies at UMD in September of 2016 and is expected to graduate in May, 2021.  She received her B.S. in materials science engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China June, 2016.  Zhang is advised by Dr. Oded Rabin, an MSE Associate Professor at UMD.
