UMCP physics professor and NanoCenter member Ellen Williams has published her inaugural article in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Dr. Williams' research focuses on organic materials with seminconducting properties. There are organic nanomaterials which show promise in plastics and electronics to replace larger silicon-based materials.

Dr. Williams was first elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2005. In addition to her professorship and active participation in the Maryland NanoCenter, she also heads the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). MRSEC, which is funded by NAS, carries out nationally recognized fundamental research on surfaces and interfaces of materials with potential impact on the next generation of opto- and nano-electronic devices, and on complex oxides with potential applications in memory, switches and sensors.
