Radiation Dosimeters and Dosimeter Readers
Personal Radiation Dosimeters
Personal radiation dosimeters, or “radiation badges”, are devices that monitor and store personal radiation exposure information from ionizing radiation. Dosimeters are used on persons working with radioactive materials or radiation-producing machines. Personal radiation dosimeters are for people who could receive a radiation “dose” in excess of 500 Mill Rem (5 Milli Sieverts) in a year. Dosimeters are provided to people who could potentially be exposed to radiation during the course of performing their jobs. This would apply to emergency responders, homeland security, fire fighters, hazmat technicians and medical workers.
Dosimetry is also used where radiation is unexpected such as in the aftermath of a radiological release incident. Specifically where exposure to the public dose is measured and calculated to be at harmful levels. Harmful radiation levels can from indicators such as ambient measurements of radiation and radioactive contamination.
Many dosimeters, such as the RAD60 and DMC-3000 are classified as self-reading and/or alarming devices. These instruments allow the user to select early warning and alarms for the amount of exposure that they receive. They can also be warned of significantly higher than expected radiation levels. Self-reading dosimeters have digital read outs for instant access to the exposure monitoring data. These devices can also be linked electronically to a database or software program to maintain records and configure the devices.
