Radiation Portal Monitors and Radiation Area Monitors
Radiation Portal Monitors and Radiation Area Monitors
Radiation portal monitors (RPMs) and radiation area monitors are passive radiation detection devices. They are used for the screening of individuals, vehicles, cargo or general areas for detection of radioactive materials or radiation contamination. Fear of terrorist attacks with radiological weapons spurred RPM deployment for cargo scanning since 9/11.
Originally developed for screening individuals and vehicles at secure facilities such as weapons laboratories, radiation portals are now commonly used at scrap metal operations, foundries, land fills and recycling facilities to detect radiation sources incoming material to avoid radioactive sources illegally disposed in this way. RPMs are also deployed at civilian and military nuclear facilities to prevent theft of radiological materials.
The monitors are designed to detect traces of radiation emitted from an object passing through it. Most times, gamma radiation is detected. In some cases the monitors are complemented by neutron detection when sensitivity for special nuclear material is desired.
As part of the effort to thwart nuclear smuggling after the breakup of the Soviet Union, the US Department of Energy deployed many RPMs worldwide as part of the Second Line of Defense Program in the late 1990s. After the attack of 9/11, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) started the Radiation Portal Monitor Program (RPMP) to deploy RPMs around all US borders.
